    Year: 2022

The large-scale redevelopment project for the main roads between Aarau, Buchs and Suhr focuses on creating a modern, safe and sustainable traffic environment. The redesign responds more closely to everyday use of the street. Pedestrians and cyclists are given more space, public transport operates more efficiently and the area is more inviting as a place to spend time. Overall, the project creates a better balance between traffic, public use and greenery within the street scene.

    Trees and the TreeParker system

An important element of the redevelopment is the planting of new street trees. Species well suited to the urban climate were selected, including nettle trees, columnar pedunculate oaks, silver limes and disease-resistant elms. To ensure good growing conditions within paved areas, the TreeParker system was installed. This underground tree bunker system provides sufficient space for root development and improved access to water and oxygen. At the same time, the surface above remains suitable for traffic, giving the trees a durable growing environment within the urban setting. In addition, the TreeParker system is equipped with Tree Root Guiding panels, which guide root growth to prevent surface heave and help keep the paving intact.

    An attractive streetscape

The redevelopment of Aarau–Buchs–Suhr has resulted in a visible improvement to the quality of the public realm. The street is greener, clearer and more pleasant for both users and local residents. The newly planted trees provide shade and cooling, enhance the streetscape and contribute to increased urban biodiversity. Thanks to the TreeParker system, the trees are able to develop healthily, extending their lifespan and reducing long-term maintenance costs. The project demonstrates how smart infrastructure and urban greenery can work together to create a future-proof public space.
