Recent scientific studies highlight the importance of sustainable approaches in stormwater management. A 2020 study illustrates this with two case studies in Poland. These studies examine the technical and economic aspects of solutions such as retention tanks and rain gardens. The findings demonstrate that these solutions are not only effective in reducing stormwater nuisances but can also be economically sustainable, especially when supported by financial incentive schemes.

Integrated Stormwater Management Solution

Limited Space for SuDS

The SuDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems) is a frequently applied method to better capture water and allow it to infiltrate the ground. A SuDS is a low-lying area often planted with water-absorbing vegetation, acting as a natural sponge. Although SuDS are a green and sustainable solution for water infiltration, in urban environments, every square meter is typically intensively utilized. This often leaves little room for sufficient green areas with SuDS to prevent waterlogging.

Underground SuDS

In places where space does not allow for above-ground SuDS, the TreeParker system offers a solution. This system is essentially an underground SuDS. Water enters the TreeParker system from street level through a line drain or catch basin. The system is equipped with drainage pipes, allowing the water to be released into the soil. However, the water must be able to drain away, so in areas with high water tables, an underground SuDS in the form of the TreeParker system is not feasible. In areas with lower water tables, it is an optimal solution for water storage and maintaining groundwater levels. The system requires little space compared to an above-ground SuDS, making it easy to implement in many locations. Additionally, cables and pipes, which are abundant in urban environments, can be seamlessly integrated into the system. Thus, the TreeParker system contributes to urban greening while simultaneously preventing waterlogging.
